Nevada casinos generate record $1.23bn win in May

Nevada casinos reported $1.23bn in May win, a new single-month record.

May win shattered the state’s previous record of $1.17bn set in October 2007. Nevada collected $107m in May percentage fees from taxable revenues.

Clark County casinos were responsible for $1.05bn of the monthly win with $655m of that total going to Las Vegas Strip resorts. Las Vegas up 27% from May 2019, the last comparable year. Downtown casinos won an additional $75.2m.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority said 2.9m people visited Las Vegas in May, up 12% from April. Hotel room occupancy was 71% including 88% weekend occupancy.

Several Las Vegas resorts returned to full capacity in May in accordance with Nevada Gaming Control Board policy that said operators could fully reopen if 80% or more employees received their Covid-19 vaccination.

In Washoe County, home to Reno, win reached $91.9m, a 23% increase from May 2019.

Statewide, slots set a single-month record in win by generating $841m, up 5.9% from April. Demand for table games skyrocketed in May with win totaling $389m for a month-on-month increase of 58%.

Nevada sportsbooks saw May handle of $478m, an increase of 4.3% from April. Revenue was $27.1m, basically even with the month prior.

Mobile accounted for $298m of the month’s handle, on par with April. Retail sportsbooks saw a tremendous increase in wagers, taking in $180m for an 11.8% improvement from April.
