Massachusetts May gaming revenue reaches $87m

Massachusetts’ three commercial casinos recorded May revenue of $87m, up slightly from April even as Covid-19 protocols remained in place for most of the month.

Encore Boston Harbor generated win of $52.9m to lead the state, with table and slots revenue both up single digits from the prior month.

MGM Springfield saw a small decrease month-to-month, taking in May revenue of $21.3m. The slot parlor at Plainridge Park Casino generated another $12.5m, basically even with April.

Together the casinos provided Massachusetts with a monthly record $24.7m in tax revenue, topping the previous record of $24.3m set in February 2020.

What makes the record even more impressive is that casinos were operating under limited capacity and social distancing until May 29.

A push is underway in Boston to bring sports betting to the Bay State. A poll commissioned by Plainridge and Encore found 61% of state voters support the legalization of sports betting. The 500-person poll was released Wednesday.

The approval for sports betting legalization grows to 72% when respondents were told revenue would be used to support K-12 education.

“Massachusetts voters robustly support legalizing sports betting. This survey’s results show that sentiment is broad across all of the Commonwealth’s regions and demographic constituencies,” said pollster David Paleologos, according to the Sentinel & Enterprise.

Nevertheless, lawmakers have been reluctant to take up the issue even as neighboring state Connecticut recently legalized sports betting through a revised tribal state gaming compact.

Rhode Island and New Hampshire are presently the only two New England states with live regulated sports betting.
