The Pamunkey Indian Tribe finally unveiled the name of its proposed casino project in Norfolk, Virginia: HeadWaters Resort and Casino.
The Tribe has spent nearly three years attempting to get a resort built in Norfolk. Local voters gave their approval in the November 2020 election.
The Virginia Lottery still must approve the Tribe’s casino operator license application before construction can commence.
The $500m casino is slated be built next to Harbor Park, home of the Norfolk Tides Minor League Baseball Team. The facility will be on the Elizabeth River in downtown Norfolk.
According to a statement released by the Tribe, the “HeadWaters” name is symbolic in multiple ways. Because the term “head waters” is where a river begins, the resort is seen as the beginning of a new chapter for both the Tribe and the city.
The name also is an appreciation for the role rivers have played in the history of the local area, the Tribe explained.
The logo includes a rippling water feather. The primary colors include two shades of blue.
Robert Gray, Chief of the Pamunkey Indian Tribe, said in a statement, “Excitement is building and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the name. There is just something about having a name that makes it feel more real. I am confident that HeadWaters Resort & Casino will exceed even the highest of expectations and will make Norfolk proud.”
The Tribe said the resort will have more than 300 guest rooms. If approvals are received soon, the casino could open in 2023.
