Vermont Lottery joins national Gift Responsibly campaign ahead of holiday season

The Vermont Lottery has joined the 2025 Gift Responsibly campaign, a national responsible gambling initiative designed to raise awareness of the risks associated with youth exposure to gambling during the holiday season.
The annual campaign is organized by the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) and supported by the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries (NASPL).
The campaign focuses on discouraging the purchase of lottery tickets as gifts for children and teenagers, reinforcing that lottery products are intended exclusively for adults aged 18 and over.
According to the NCPG, research has consistently shown a correlation between early exposure to gambling and an increased likelihood of developing gambling-related problems later in life.
Through its participation, the Vermont Lottery is emphasizing that while lottery tickets may be viewed as a form of entertainment for adults, they are not appropriate gifts for minors.
The campaign encourages consumers to consider age-appropriate, non-gambling alternatives when purchasing gifts for younger audiences.
In addition to youth protection, the Gift Responsibly campaign promotes broader responsible play principles.
Players are encouraged to treat lottery participation as entertainment rather than a source of income, set spending limits, and remain aware of the odds associated with lottery games.
Messaging also highlights the importance of keeping play affordable and within personal financial boundaries.
The Vermont Lottery is directing individuals who may be concerned about gambling behaviors, either their own or those of others, to support services including the National Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-800-GAMBLER.
Additional resources are available through vtgamblinghelp.org, which provides information on prevention, treatment, and recovery services across the state.
The campaign also extends to industry stakeholders. Providers and retailers are able to access free problem gambling training through the Vermont Department of Mental Health, supporting broader education and early intervention efforts within the lottery ecosystem.
In October 2021, Scientific Games was awarded a 10-year lottery systems contract to modernize the Vermont Lottery’s operations, supplying central gaming systems, retailer terminals, and self-service machines.
The agreement formed part of the Lottery’s longer-term strategy to balance revenue growth with responsible play initiatives that support public education funding in the state.
