Chile: Did a senator cross a line? New casino proposal faces scrutiny

Chilean senator Francisco Huenchumilla is facing scrutiny after publicly defending his proposal to establish a third casino in La Araucanía, while dismissing concerns about his daughter’s senior position at Dreams Temuco. 

The issue emerged after the re-elected Christian Democrat confirmed plans to advance with his idea, originally presented during the campaign period, to open a new casino in the province of Malleco managed by Mapuche communities.

The senator, though, did not disclose at the time that his daughter, Mariela Huenchumilla, is not merely an employee at Dreams but actually serves as its Corporate Manager of Responsible Gaming. 

Once questioned, he insisted there is “no connection whatsoever” between his legislative stance and her role, arguing that all six of his children have careers in the private sector and that their employment does not influence his political decisions at all.

Still, the overlap between his proposal and his daughter’s executive position has sparked debate around transparency and public trust. 

Still, the perception of proximity to the casino industry could raise legitimate questions about impartiality, especially in a region where gambling licences and operations remain politically sensitive.

Earlier this year, Dreams began construction of the new Talca casino, a project already under environmental scrutiny due to concerns raised by local groups and regulators. 

Despite the controversy, Huenchumilla confirmed he will proceed with the proposal.

Whether the public will accept that explanation or keep questioning the timing and connections behind it remains an open question.
