Unimontes to offer free assistance for gambling addiction

The State University of Monte Carlos, also known as Unimontes, has begun offering free assistance to those struggling with problem gambling habits. The National Confederation of Commerce (CNC) estimated a loss of approximately $20.2m in 2024 alone for the retail sector due to betting.
“Currently there is a significant increase in the number of patients who seek assistance due to a problem related to this inability to inhibit the desire to play,” project member Romerson Brito said.
“So the number of patients who evolve to this addiction to games has grown a lot and often this dependence is associated with several functions that draw attention, such as depressive symptoms, anxiety and thoughts of death.”
CNC Chief Economist Felipe Tavares stated problem gambling habits have also been found to affect an individual’s productivity at work, as employees were reported to be participating in games during working hours.
On September 18, The Addiction Professionals of North Carolina launched two new centers funded by the North Carolina Division of Mental Health/Developmental Disabilities/Substance Use Services, including the Center of Excellence for Addiction Policy and Practice (CEGAPP) and the Professional Development Center (PDC).
The CEGAPP will provide education and training on gambling prevention, treatment and recovery, as well as thought leadership on problem gambling and addiction for all demographics.
The PDC was designed to “strengthen the core professional skills” required to join the addiction workforce through training, mentorship and leadership development.
