Civil Police in the state of Rio de Janeiro dismantled a large-scale illegal cockfighting operation in the municipality of Araruama, uncovering what investigators described as a “professionalized” betting setup with its own arena, bleachers and its organized wagering system.
The operation, coordinated by the national Environmental Protection Police Department, followed intelligence work indicating that clandestine championships were being held regularly on the property.
Upon arrival, police found nearly a hundred people taking part of it, some betting, others organizing or spectating.
Inside the site, officers discovered two firearms, betting tables listing odds and evidence that money was exchanged on each fight.
The 24 arrested people face charges of animal cruelty, criminal association and illegal gambling. Two were arrested for possession of firearms, while another was found to have an outstanding warrant for attempted homicide in a separate case.

Forty roosters were rescued, many showing visible injuries and signs of prolonged mistreatment. The animals were given medical attention and will be relocated to shelters.
Authorities believe the fights generated significant betting turnover, being part of illegal gambling networks that often operate under the radar in rural regions.
Investigators said the raid serves as part of an ongoing national effort to dismantle such operations and reinforce Brazil’s stance on animal welfare and responsible gaming.
