Coljuegos orders blocking of illegal electoral betting website

Key Points
- Coljuegos requested the blocking of an illegal website offering electoral betting in Colombia
- An investigation was opened against those responsible for the unauthorized activity
Coljuegos, the Colombian regulator, has requested the blocking of an illegal website that operates betting on electoral events. The regulator has also initiated an investigation into those responsible for running this unauthorized activity.
Marco Emilio Hincapié, President of the entity, said: “We want to inform Colombians that this website is illegal and does not have the required authorization to operate online games in Colombia. For this reason, we have requested that the site be blocked and have opened an investigation into those responsible for engaging in this illicit activity.”
Coljuegos emphasized that the operation of betting platforms over electoral results is not permitted under Colombian law. The regulator said that such sites violate the legal framework governing games of chance and transparency in elections.
The move builds on Coljuegos’s ongoing efforts to curb illegal gambling online. To date, the regulator has requested the blocking of 28,100 websites operating illegal online games, and an additional 3,000 blocking requests are expected in the coming months.
Good to know: Colombia’s gambling trade body Fecoljuegos has formally urged Coljuegos to block Polymarket, claiming the platform allows unlicensed electoral betting and poses risks to democracy
Hincapié said: “Our purpose is to defend the legal industry, which this year has already contributed COP 256.7m ($64.2m) to subsidized health care and about COP 783m in VAT.”
The request to block the illegal portal has been formally submitted to the relevant authorities. Coljuegos expects that, if the block is enforced, it will halt access to the site from within Colombia and help prevent its further operation in the national digital space.
Currently, only 14 operators are legally authorized to offer online gaming in Colombia: Rushbet, Stake, BingoCasinos, Betano, Betplay, Wplay, Sportium, Codere, Luckia, Rivalo, YaJuego, Bwin, Zamba and Betsson.
Odds tell a story long before the result does. When bettors learn to read that story properly, betting becomes a matter of discipline and value rather than emotion or guesswork.
