The total was also a 75% increase from the $22.7m earned in December 2020, and the highest sports betting total the state has ever achieved, ahead of November 2020’s $35.1m.
Total revenue for the month was $3.7m, a 13% increase from the prior-year period. Mobile betting accounted for $2.1m of all revenue for the month, with Twin River Casino and Tiverton Casino together amounting to the remaining $1.6m.
Twin River meanwhile accounted for $13.1m of January’s sports wagers, with Tiverton Casino representing $4.8m of the $39.8m total. Mobile betting was, however, the leader once again with $21.9m in sports wagers.
The state’s two licensed retail casinos were forced into closures from 29 November to 21 December, and reopened with limited hours and reduced capacity due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The closures saw a drop in both wagers and revenue for December.
For the financial year to date, total sports wagers now stand at $193.5m in the seven months through to the end of January 2021, with revenue amounting to $21m.
