New Jersey DGE seeks to implement required online RG standards

Under the DGE proposal, operators would be responsible for automatically reviewing accounts which alert certain triggers, such as single-day deposits over $10,000 or $100,000 in 90 days.
Key Points
- Operators conducting business in New Jersey would also have to appoint a “responsible gaming lead,” who will maintain a list of at-risk players to ensure assistance is provided
- If any player is found to be at risk of gambling-related issues, the operator will be required to follow a specific three-step plan when issuing RG help
The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) has issued a new proposal which would require online gambling operators to follow a mandatory set of responsible gaming (RG) practices, such as automatically reviewing accounts that alert certain precautionary triggers.
Under the DGE proposal, operators would be responsible for automatically reviewing accounts which show signs of problem gambling, such as single-day deposits over $10,000 or $100,000 in 90 days.
Operators conducting business in New Jersey would also have to appoint a “responsible gaming lead,” who will maintain a list of at-risk players to ensure assistance is provided, including a shut down of the account if needed.
In addition to deposit thresholds, triggers highlighted by the DGE include visiting the self-exclusion page multiple times without progression, requesting two “cool-off” periods within 30 days, raising deposit/loss limits three times in one week without lowering either and logging in 50% more than the prior two weeks.
If any player is to be found at risk of gambling-related issues, the operator will be required to follow a specific three-step plan when issuing RG help, beginning with an email sent to the player with information on RG tools and support resources.

Step two involves restricting any methods of betting until the user watches a DGE-approved video tutorial, while step three would require the operator to have the RG lead reach out directly by phone or video call.
If three attempts to call go unanswered, the account will then be suspended until contact is made, and could result in closure if the player were to still show signs of problem gambling.
