Police in the Brazilian city Parnaíba have raided the homes of three social media influencers who are under investigation in relation to the ongoing ‘Jogo do Tigrinho,’ or ‘Fortune Tiger’ scandal.
Since 2024, cyber criminals have marketed a fake version of the PG Soft mobile slot game to Brazilian players and used it to steal their money.
The viral popularity of the game was achieved partly through illicit partnerships with celebrity social media influencers in the country who promoted the game, suggesting that there were tactics by which players could sustainably earn money from the slot.
On the morning of 11 September, the police targeted the homes of Thaisa Costa Machado, Tereza Iva Gomes Freitas and Emília Magalhães Brito, none of whom have been arrested, though they have been issued with subpoenas.
The police chief Ayslan Magalhães called out the promotions of the fake games which “promise quick wins with real money.”
He added: “These platforms operate without official authorization, without transparency or auditing, outside the law, like online casinos.”
Good to know: Between them, the three influencers had social media followings amounting to more than one million people
A number of items, including cars, luxury items and documents were seized in the operation named Laverna, after the Roman goddess of thieves.
It is claimed by police that the influencer-led promotions will have generated around R$10 million ($1.9m) of unlawful funds.
A statement from Emília Brito’s legal team makes clear that she is cooperating with law enforcement and denies that the influencer has acted without respect to the law.
