The Buenos Aires Province Lottery has held a talk to raise awareness about compulsive gambling and gambling addiction, alongside the provincial Ombudsman’s Office and the Municipality of Lanús.
More than 600 high school students from the city of Lanús took part in the lecture series “Habrá señales” (“There will be signs”), which is currently touring different municipalities in the province to highlight the risks of gambling addiction.
The event was led by TV and radio host Nicolás Cayetano, who is also known for his role as a speaker raising awareness about gambling addiction.
Held at the Carlos Gardel Theater, he spoke with young people about the importance of recognizing warning signs early and openly shared his personal experience with gambling, his addiction, and his recovery.
Also in attendance were Gonzalo Atanasof, President of the Lottery and Casinos Institute; Guido Lorenzino, the Buenos Aires Ombudsman; and Leandro Decuzzi, secretary of government for the municipality.
Atanasof said: “It is very important for young people to hear firsthand, from someone who has gone through it, what gambling addiction means and what warning signs to look out for to ask for help in time.
Good to know: Buenos Aires City Lottery president Jesús Acevedo estimated that illegal gambling makes up 65–75% of Argentina’s betting market, posing risks for minors using mobile platforms
“There’s a very positive exchange with Cayetano, where the students listen attentively to his story, and at the end of the talk they clear up doubts and ask him questions.”
During his presentation, Cayetano emphasized that “gambling addiction is, among addictions, the most silent one” and encouraged students to “pay attention to the signs and open up spaces for dialogue.”
The series is designed to raise awareness about the risks of online and illegal gambling, an issue that, according to the Buenos Aires Province Lottery, is becoming increasingly prevalent among teens and young people. Every talk ends with an open Q&A, allowing attendees to voice their questions and concerns to the speaker.
