Jim Shore, Seminole Tribe of Florida General Counsel, passes away at 80

Jim Shore, 80, Seminole Tribe of Florida’s General Counsel of the Seminole Tribe, died August 30 at Cleveland Clinic Hospital in Weston, Florida.
Earlier in the day, Shore had suffered from cardiac arrest at his nearby home and was rushed to the hospital.
Shore was born February 16, 1945, northwest of Lake Okeechobee as a member of the Seminole Tribe’s Bird Clan. He grew up near what is now the Brighton Seminole Reservation.
Shore continued to live in the area as he grew up. In 1963, he graduated from Okeechobee High School. Following an automobile accident in 1970, which blinded him, Shore went on to earn a degree in history from North Florida Junior College and was one of the first members of the Tribe to attend college. He graduated in 1977.
Shore was the first member of the Seminole Tribe to become a lawyer.
He attended Stetson University College of Law in St. Petersburg, graduated in 1980 and was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1981. The following year, he began representing the Tribe as general counsel.
Throughout his time serving as legal counsel, Shore negotiated several compacts for the Tribe and helped establish “Unlimited Bingo” in the region.
He continued handling legal matters for the Tribe for more than four decades.
A graveside funeral service was held on September 1, with hundreds of Tribal and non-tribal members attending.
Seminole Tribe Chairman Marcellus Osceola Jr. described Shore as “a man of few words,” who had “a big heart and exception vision.”
He further commented, “Jim Shore worked tirelessly to ensure a prosperous future for the members of the Seminole Tribe of Florida,” said Seminole Tribe Chairman Marcellus Osceola Jr. “We owe him a huge debt of gratitude for everything he accomplished on the Tribe’s behalf.”
Seminole Gaming CEO Jim Allen, who Shore hired, said, “Mr. Shore was by far the humblest individual that I’ve ever worked for in my career. He would never take credit for all of the amazing things that have occurred under not just his leadership, but his wisdom.”
