California federal prosectors request lenient sentence in Mathew Bowyer case

Bowyer has pleaded guilty to charges connected to an illegal sports betting scandal.

Federal prosecutors in California have recommended illegal bookie Mathew Bowyer receive a 15-month sentence for his connection to the illegal sports betting scandal involving baseball star Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter, according to a Nevada Independent news report.
According to the local report, Bowyer failed to report more than $4m in income during one tax year. The investigation received Bowyer accepted millions of dollars in wagers from Ohtani’s interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, and laundered funds at Resorts World Las Vegas.
Mizuhara first opened a bank account for Ohtani in 2018. According to his plea agreement, he began stealing money from the account soon after.
He went on to place a series of bets, which he deposited into his own bank account. His winnings totaled more than $142m, while losing wagers reached $183m. None of the bets were placed on baseball.
Mizuhara is currently serving a 57-month sentence.
The government motion said Bowyer’s business, “placed and accepted bets on sporting events for its clients, and employed agents and sub-agents, including casino hosts, who referred and recruited clients, demanded and collected on bettors’ losses and distributed winnings, and were paid a portion of the losses bettors incurred and paid.”
Bowyer recently admitted to several charges, including operating an illegal gambling business, money laundering and filing a false tax return. He has also cooperated with the prosecution by providing information about Resorts World Las Vegas executives and hosts, according to the local report.
