Plaza Hotel to celebrate 50th anniversary throughout 2021

Downtown Las Vegas icon once featured the only US train station located in a casino.

The Plaza Hotel & Casino in Downtown Las Vegas will celebrate its 50th anniversary with several promotions and special events throughout 2021.

When it opened on 2 July, 1971, the property was known as the Union Plaza, a name that paid homage to the Union Pacific Railroad Depot where it was built. An Amtrak station and ticket window were connected to the hotel, making it the only US train station located in a casino.

Passenger train service continued until 1997 via Amtrak’s Desert Wind.

In 1971, the Plaza was the largest Downtown Vegas property at 22-stories, 504 rooms and a 66,000-sqare-foot casino. In the 1980s, a second tower and convention center were added, making the Plaza the first Downtown hotel to cater to the meetings and events market.

The property’s glass dome overlooking Main and Fremont Streets for a time was a one-of-a-kind swimming pool, and later was a filming spot for a scene in the 1995 movie Casino.

The Plaza has been featured in numerous other films, TV shows and music videos in its five decades.

On Tuesday, officials with the property unveiled a list of anniversary promotions, including a “50 Years of Fun” hotel package, $50,000 in cash prizes, commemorative anniversary casino chips on all table games, plus limited-edition T-shirts, pins and key chains.

Couples who are celebrating 10 years of marriage or more in 2021 can enter to win a wedding anniversary vow renewal celebration.

The Plaza said it will announce additional special events later this year, including during the 4 of July holiday and anniversary weekend.
