DraftKings agrees to $3m settlement for alleged Connecticut gaming violations

Key Points
- DraftKings agreed to return approximately $3m to Connecticut consumers who participated in bonus offers which promised a deposit match or deposit bonus
- The settlement was reached following an investigation into alleged violations of Connecticut gaming laws related to marketing and advertising by DraftKings
DraftKings has officially agreed to return approximately $3m to 7,000 Connecticut players who participated in select bonus offers from October 19, 2021 through January 4, 2023, which promised a deposit match or deposit bonus.
The operator agreed to a settlement with the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) following an investigation into alleged violations of Connecticut gaming laws related to marketing and advertising by DraftKings.
“Gaming operators must clearly communicate the terms of any promotion to their customers, including requirements to wager a certain amount or other conditions to obtain a promised award,” DCP Gaming Division Director Kris Gilman said.
“We are happy that DraftKings has agreed to assess its promotions, provide additional training to its employees regarding Connecticut’s laws and regulations and return funds to consumers who misunderstood and in many cases were completely unaware of the terms of the promotions they participated in.”
Along with the reported settlement, DraftKings agreed to provide annual training on the state’s relevant laws to all Connecticut marketing and advertising employees, as well as provide “enhanced promotion” of its education hub and game tutorials for bonus offers.
The operator will also pay $50,000 toward consumer complaint resolution programs, education, protection enforcement and litigation.
Good to know: The SPGA released a statement in response to Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont choosing to sign Senate Bill 1235 into law on June 11, becoming the second state to officially prohibit the use of online sweepstakes casinos
DCP Commissioner Bryan Cafferelli spoke on the settlement, having said, “We are pleased with the outcome of this investigation and that affected consumers will be made whole.
“Thank you to our Gaming Division team, who work tirelessly on behalf of Connecticut consumers to ensure fairness and safety in our legal gaming marketplace.”
Perhaps in an effort to expand its responsible gaming offerings, DraftKings released its new My Budget Builder tool on June 30 to help players through several categories such as deposit amounts, total wagers, maximum wager size and loss limits.
