Casino workers in Buenos Aires demand strategic shift amid economic challenges

Key Points
- AECN submitted a report to new provincial director Juan Vernengo outlining critical needs and long-term goals for the sector
- Union proposes a state-run live gaming brand and urban expansion of public casinos to compete with private bingos and online platforms
- Workers also request new hires, fairer compensation and equal access to digital tools
The Argentinian National Association of Casino Workers (AECN) has called for a strategic renovation of casino operations in Buenos Aires, delivering a formal report to Juan Vernengo, the newly appointed Director of the Provincial Directorate of Casinos.
The document outlines a series of challenges faced by the state-run casino sector, including the economic recession, shrinking consumer activity and the growing dominance of online gambling, both regulated and illegal. The union warned that the proliferation of digital platforms and private bingos is accelerating the decline of traditional land-based public venues.
One of the core proposals is for the Buenos Aires Provincial Lottery and Casino Institute (IPLyC) to launch a public brand of live gaming operated directly from provincial casinos. According to the AECN, this would strengthen state supervision, improve revenue generation and provide skilled employment to workers already active in the sector.
The union also recommends a territorial restructuring that would allow state-run casinos to move into urban areas, which are currently dominated by private operators. Most public venues remain confined to seasonal tourist regions.

The report calls for urgent staffing measures, including, among other propositions, the hiring of new agents, fair pay for Sunday work, the formal classification of job categories and improved provision of essential supplies.
The union expressed its willingness to collaborate with regulators to build a sustainable inclusive agenda for the sector, emphasising the need for active worker participation.
