Brazil: Rio Government issues notices to influencers and iGaming firms

Key Points
- Over 300 entities, including influencers and betting firms, will be formally notified
- Influencers involved in Brazil’s betting inquiry are among the targets
- Notifications demand consumer protection measures or risk penalties
The municipal Government of Rio de Janeiro is intensifying its oversight of online gambling by notifying more than 300 different entities linked to betting platforms, including controversial influencers like Virginia Fonseca.
The notifications come from the State Department of Consumer Protection in coordination with Procon-RJ, the entity that aims to ensure consumer’s rights are being met. All entities receiving the notice will have 10 days to prove they comply with Brazilian consumer laws.
This includes offering transparent service information, shielding minors and vulnerable populations, implementing tools to prevent excessive gambling, providing responsible advertising and maintaining efficient customer support channels.
Failure to meet these requirements may lead to administrative proceedings and financial penalties, the Government warned.
Among the targets are not only influencers who recently appeared before the Senate’s CPI das Bets, which is Brazil’s Parliamentary inquiry into online betting, but also major betting operators, media outlets, advertising agencies and tech firms.
Good to know: Virginia Fonseca was among 16 individuals whose indictments were suggested in the rejected final report of Brazil’s CPI das Bets
Brazil’s Senate Committee received 17 new bills to reinforce betting oversight following the closure of the CPI das Bets.
The proposals target advertising restrictions, player registration and new criminal classifications in a push to establish a more secure and accountable regulatory framework.
Meanwhile, national enforcement agencies have intensified their crackdown on illegal gambling operations.
