The Disciplinary Tribunal of the San Juan Football League in Argentina has officially summoned referees to testify as part of the ongoing investigation into alleged illegal betting.
The case gained public attention a few days ago when a match between Desamparados and Peñarol on matchday 11 raised suspicions of match-fixing and illegal betting involving around 90 people, including players, referees and officials.
Juan Valiente, the League President, said: “I don’t know the number of people involved. There are suspicions, and everyone needs to be investigated. I offered to be the first to be investigated.”
Sebastián Fernández, Eduardo Prior, Alberto Riveros, Gabriel Montilla, Nelson Pérez and Domingo Allegue, an instructor at the Referees’ Academy, were all summoned. Roberto Vergara, a member of the Youth Division Board, was also called to testify.

Among those summoned are Pablo Núñez and Gabriel González, two referees who had already been suspended by the Federal Council following controversial performances in the Federal A tournament.
Both referees are expected to testify on June 11 at the League’s headquarters.
Notably, Nahuel Silva, who officiated the match between Desamparados and Peñarol, was not included in the initial list of those summoned.
In response to this, Valiente announced he would file a formal complaint with the courts.
