MGM Resorts fined $8.5m over illegal bookmaking

MGM Resorts has been fined $8.5m after allowing two illegal bookmakers to gamble at MGM Grand and The Cosmopolitan.
The voting, held Thursday by the Nevada Gaming Commission, resulted in a 4-0 decision against MGM and represents the fourth-highest fine in Nevada Gaming Control Board history.
This action comes aligned with the disciplinary action regarding former MGM Grand President Scott Sibella, whose gaming license was revoked in December, 2024, and two casino hosts. They were allegedly informed that two men from California playing at the casino were involved in illegal sports betting activities and failed to report it.
MGM responded by claiming to have made changes to prevent what happened and avoid it to be repeated in the future. Besides, the Gaming Control Board posted a 10-count, 29-page complaint against the accused company.
In the released statement, the company said: “MGM Resorts takes its compliance responsibilities seriously and cooperated fully with the Nevada Gaming Control Board to resolve this matter.
“The company has made substantial investments to build one of the industry’s strongest anti-money laundering programs – driven by executive leadership and supported by rigorous training and internal controls.
“We’ve taken additional steps to strengthen safeguards, increase accountability, and reaffirm our commitment to doing what’s right for regulators, guests, and stakeholders.”
