Maryland March figures: $588.5m handle and $4.4m in state taxes

Maryland Lottery and Gaming has released the figures for March 2025.

The total handle was $588.5m, which translated into $540.6m in payouts and $47.9m in overall hold.

This was split between $573.4m from mobile and $15.1m from retail sportsbooks.

As for individual sports, the highest handles came from $150.6m wagered in professional basketball and $87.6m in NCAA basketball, which is unsurprising considering March Madness.

This created a 4.9% hold of $7.3m and a 5.2% hold of $4.5m respectively.

Tennis created a handle of $30.5m and a hold of $2.3m, soccer had a $18.6m handle and a $796,420 hold, and professional baseball had a handle of $15.6m and a hold of $489,827.

Out of all the sports, NCAA football had the worst hold of -$22,126 which represents a percentage of -275.2% from the $8,041 wagered and $30,167 paid out.

Good to know: Since December 2021 when Maryland’s sports wagering programme was launched, $154m has been given to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund and $3.8m to the Problem Gambling Fund

However, to date so far in the 2025 fiscal year, the total hold is $4.8bn with a hold of $515.9m.

NCAA football averages out to a positive 4% hold of $6m and handle of $148.3m.

For March, the sports wagering tax equates to $4.4m, which is split between $81,455 from retail and $4.3m from mobile sportsbooks.
