Resorts World Las Vegas lays off dozens ahead of pending $10.5m fine

Key Points
- Last summer, the Nevada Gaming Control Board filed a 10-count complaint against the company
- Resorts World Las Vegas was accused of not following anti-money laundering regulations
Resorts World Las Vegas has laid off dozens of its employees, according to a local report in the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
The layoffs occurred within 24 hours of Resorts World receiving a regulatory penalty from the state, the local report said.
The casino hotel issued a recent statement regarding the layoffs and said it had “made the difficult decision to restructure a portion of our operations by less than 50 full-time team members.”
Resorts World added this decision was to “best position the company.”
The company told local news, “We appreciate the contributions all affected team members have made.
“This decision is part of our ongoing efforts to optimize efficiency and maximize the exceptional experience we seek to deliver to our guests.”
Along with its parent company, Genting Berhad, Resorts World will appear before the Nevada Gaming Commission today and respond to a complaint from the Nevada Gaming Control Board.
The control board filed the 10-count disciplinary company complaint against Resorts World last August, alleging that the casino resort failed to company with anti-money laundering regulations and allowed play from gamblers “with ties to illegal bookmaking and histories of federal felony convictions.”
As a result, Resorts World Las Vegas and its affiliates could pay a $10.5m fine. This would be the second largest fine levied by state regulators if this settlement agreement with gaming regulators goes through, the local report said.
