The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has sent a cease-and-desist letter to offshore operator BetNow.eu Sportsbook, Casino and Racebook.
The regulator said BetNow is operating illegally within the state.
BetNow offers players several gaming options on its offshore site, including poker, slots and live dealer games.
Through BetNow, players have access to blackjack, roulette and craps, along with betting services for horseracing and sports events.
However, the MGCB says the operator is violating three of Michigan gambling laws.
MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams said, “This unlicensed operator not only violates Michigan law, but also exposes consumers to significant risks.
“Our job is to protect Michigan residents by ensuring that all online gambling is conducted legally and responsibly.”
In the state of Michigan, operators must apply for licensing and must be approved by the state before they can offer services.
Operating an unlicensed gambling business in Michigan is a felony per state law.
According to the state penal code, “Gambling, which involves payment based on the outcome of an uncertain event, is prohibited under state law.”
It is illegal to accept money “with the understanding it will be paid based on a game of chance.”
The MGCB said BetNow has broken Michigan law based on these three legal standards.
In other regulatory news, the control board has recently taken the initiative to raise awareness in an effort to combat human trafficking.
The regulator said the effort is part of its desire to offer safe spaces for players and employees within the state’s gambling establishments.
