Metropolitan Park project in Flushing receives go-ahead from City Planning Commission

Key Points
- The development would convert a 50-acre parking near Citi Field into an entertainment complex with a casino as the main centerpiece
- The City Planning Commission voted in strong favor of the amendments during a public meeting held on February 19
Steve Cohen and Hard Rock Entertainment received positive news on its Metropolitan Park project in Flushing, New York after the City Planning Commission voted in favor of modifications to zoning regulations required for the proposed complex.
The project would convert a 50-acre parking lot located west of Citi Field, where Cohen’s New York Mets baseball franchise plays, into an entertainment complex with a casino as the main centerpiece.
While the $8bn complex’s development area would be located in the parking lot, it is legally designated as “city parkland,” meaning zoning text and city map amendments must be approved before the project can proceed.
Luckily for Cohen and Hard Rock, the Commission voted in overwhelming support of the amendments during a public meeting held on February 19, as the project will continue to progress through the Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP) process.
Good to know: New York Senator Joseph Addabbo introduced bill SB 2614 on January 23, which would officially legalize iGaming for casinos, video lottery terminal facilities, online sports betting operators and Tribes located within the state
“This vote reflects the overwhelming community support and input Steve Cohen and Hard Rock have collected over the past three years. We look forward to presenting our community-first vision to Council Member Moya and the City Council,” Metropolitan Park Spokesperson Karl Rickett said in a statement following the vote.
The proposal now awaits to see if it will be granted one of the three downstate casino licenses that will be approved by state legislators in the coming months.
Representatives from the Metropolitan Park project have previously stated that the development will not proceed unless it receives one of the three licenses.
