DC posts $68.5m January sports betting handle

Key Points
- FanDuel was the only operator in DC until last summer
- DC has offered legal sports betting to players since 2020
The District of Columbia has released its sports wagering results for January. Last month, DC posted a handle that reached close to $68.5m.
DC players during the month of January walked away with a large chunk of winnings as well. Players in DC took home more than $65.2m in total wins last month.
Altogether, DC’s sportsbook generated more than $8m in January revenue.
Up until mid-July, players could only access mobile sports betting through FanDuel. The operator is a current partner with the DC Lottery. However, the city council recently approved a budget to make room for additional operators to come to DC.
Throughout last year, the District of Columbia has welcomed several new operators, including Fanatics, DraftKings, Caesars and BetMGM.
Top revenue earners last month included FanDuel, DraftKings and BetMGM. Last month, FanDuel yielded a revenue total of $6m.
DraftKings and BetMGM grabbed the second and third place spots, bringing in $2m and $0.5m in revenue respectively.
Good to know: The District of Columbia has allowed legal sports betting since 2020
Since the federal government lifted its ban on legal sports betting, following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) nearly seven years ago, 38 states have established legal and regulated sports betting markets.
In other recent news, Intralot and Veterans Services Corporation (VSC) were forced to pay $6.5m to the District of Columbia, following an investigation by the Office of the Attorney General (OAG).
The investigation revealed that both companies had “deceived District officials in order to obtain a lottery and sports betting contract.”
