The Massachusetts Gaming Commission recently voted to allow prop bets during Super Bowl LIX related to the coin toss.
The Kansas City Chiefs will take on the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, February 9 in New Orleans’ Caesars Superdome. Kickoff is at 6:30pm Eastern Time.
Bettors will be able to wager on which team will win the coin toss and on the toss results.
The regulator announced the additional wagering option in a recent social media post and has added the event wager to its online sports betting catalog.
Prop bets involve wagers on how many rebounds or points a basketball player could have or the number of touchdowns or yards that football players might have.
With prop betting, players bet on these game aspects “instead of or in conjunction with a game’s outcome or spread.”
Prop betting has been the center of controversy for several months due to the recent investigation involving ex-NBA star Jontay Porter. Six people have now been charged in connection with the sports betting scandal involving the former NBA player.

Prior to his dismissal from the NBA, Porter played center for the Toronto Raptors. The NBA began looking into prop bet abnormalities surrounding the player last spring.
Recent reports show that DraftKings flagged prop bets in two specific games. According to the report, these prop bets “involved Porter in its daily betting insights.”
