Penn State encourages students to consider sports betting impact on mental health
Campus counselors point out potential risk warnings.
Key Points
- The university encourages students to reach out if they need help
- Studies show that young adults and college students could be at a higher risk for problem gambling issues
Counselors at Penn State’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) have encouraged university students to consider potential risks connected with sports betting.
CAPS cited financial strain, academic challenges, and impacts on mental health and well-being as risks to consider when deciding whether to gamble.
CAPS alcohol and other drug coordinator and counselor Lori Strayer said, “Gambling can be a hidden problem since there are few outward signs and people are often afraid to talk about it.
“That is why it is so important to talk to someone early on. Gambling concerns are treatable, and help is available.”
CAPS assistant director for community education and outreach and psychologist Stephanie Stama explained why the counseling service is warning Penn State students.
She commented, “Sports betting can start as a casual activity but once someone loses money it can quickly lead to shame and fear of talking about the financial, academic and emotional distress it causes.
“Sports betting, casino and gambling platforms are increasingly convenient to access and marketed specifically to college students.”
According to a 2023 study conducted by the National Council on Problem Gambling, young adults and college students “are at a heightened risk for developing gambling-related issues.”
The student found that social pressure, easy access to betting platforms online and excitement of sports betting “can contribute to compulsive gambling behaviors.”
“Penn State encourages students to be aware of the impact sports betting may have on their mental health and to reach out for support if needed,” the university said in an online statement.
The university also listed warning signs of problem gambling for students to consider, including wagering more money than intended, borrowing money to place wagers, feeling stress and anxiety due to gambling and experiencing conflict with family and friends because of gambling habits.
