The Michigan Gaming Control Board has approved PointsBet as the state’s 10th authorized operator for online sports betting.

PointsBet is the platform provider for the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, who operate the Northern Waters Casino Resort in Watersmeet.

Michigan is set to launch online sports betting this Friday Jan. 22.

“The MGCB team worked closely with the Lac Vieux Desert tribe and PointsBet to wrap up regulatory requirements for online sports betting in time for the initial launch,” said Richard S. Kalm, MGCB executive director. “Other operators will launch as they meet the requirements, which are designed to protect participants and instill confidence in honest gaming.”

Australian-based PointsBet has aggressively expanded into the United States over the last two years by establishing a Denver headquarters and launching its platform in New Jersey, Illinois, Iowa, Colorado and soon Michigan.

Pointsbet and LVD are working to establish a retail sportsbook at the tribe’s casino, as well.

“The Tribe is excited to join forces with PointsBet to further the Tribe's economic development efforts and expand gaming online as allowable under Michigan and federal law,” said James Williams, Jr., Lac Vieux Desert Tribal Chairman earlier this month. “We are confident that this new opportunity will strengthen the Tribe's self-sufficiency and self-determination efforts and provide much needed revenue to continue to expand and enhance tribal governmental services as well as provide jobs for the LVD community."
