Maryland posts $637.3m December sports betting handle

Maryland Lottery and Gaming has released its sports betting report for the month of December. Sports wagering last month generated nearly $6.5m in contributions to the state.
Players throughout the state wagered nearly $637.3m last month, an increase of 13.8% year-over-year.
Nearly $619.5m in bets came from wagers placed online, while $17.8m in bets were placed at retail sportsbook locations.
Sports bettors during the month of December walked away with $591.7m in winnings. Online and mobile players won $573.1m, while retail bettors won $18.6m.
During December 13 retail locations and 11 mobile platforms operated throughout the state.
Last month, Long Shot’s in Frederick reopened its retail sportsbook location after being closed for more than six months. The destination is now running under a new operator, Caesars Sportsbook.
Sports betting cumulative contribution to the Blueprint Fund reached the $135m mark during December.
Since the market’s debut, the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund has received $135m in contributions, while the state’s Problem Gambling Fund has received nearly $3.6m.
Per the current regulations, Maryland’s sportsbooks contribute 15% of all taxable wins to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund. The organization supports public education programs around the state.
Retail sports betting has been legal in the state of Maryland since 2021. The state opened its online sports wagering market in 2022.
