Missouri sports betting could affect Kansas market

Voters approved a legal market last month.

Sports betting in the state of Kansas has done well since the state opened its legal market two years ago.

However, the state could face some competition once Missouri launches its commercial market, according to a WIBW local news report.

During last month’s election, Missouri voters cast ballots and pulled the lever in favor of Amendment 2, a constitutional amendment that would welcome legal and regulated sports betting.

This brings the state one step closer to opening a commercial market and would make Missouri the 39th state to welcome legal sports wagering.

Bettors in Missouri have traveled to Kansas to place bets in the past. A new market would stop this traffic from coming into Kansas.

Currently, 38 states and the District of Columbia offer some form of legal sports betting. The market has grown significantly since the Supreme Court overturned PASPA in May 2018.

Last month, Kansas reported generating more than $200m since legislators legalized sports betting in 2022.

This year, the state has generated $91m in tax revenue, which includes $4.6m last month.

Kansas Lottery Spokesman Cory Thone told local news that sports betting has done better in the state than regulators predicted.

He commented, “It has been incredibly popular, more so than we even predicted here in the state.

“People have really taken to it and there have been some big winners we had some particularly with teams like the Chiefs who have gone on the win championships that has led to some big wins for our players.”

Thone went on to add that he believes Missouri sports betting could affect the market, though he is not sure how significant this change would be.

He said in closing, “I think there would certainly be some type of impact but I’m not sure how much it’s going to be, I don’t want to speculate.
