PokerStars has announced that its Women’s Winter Festival poker event in London set a record for the largest women’s poker event to be held outside Las Vegas, with over 271 players taking part.

"This event was a celebration of women, and about championing and empowering women in poker,” Women’s Winter Festival Founder and PokerStars Ambassador Kerryjane Craigie said.

“I'm so pleased that we have created this amazing community event that was accessible for everyone to come and have a go and was filled with fun, laughter and fantastic poker. Thank you to everyone who joined us, I'm excited to see what's ahead."

Each participant joined after a $400 buy-in, attempting to take home a portion of the $127,300 guaranteed prize pool and the PokerStars trophy. Argentine poker professional Maria Lampropulos won the Main Event with a top prize of $25,460.

In addition to the Main Event, the Women's Winter Festival featured PokerStars first-ever Women's High Roller event and the 50/50 event, which saw an equal field of female and male players take to the table game.

"The innovative 50/50 event, with half women and half men was the most fun I've ever had at a poker tourney, with toasts, singing and belly laughs,” PokerStars Ambassador Jennifer Shahade said.

Good to know: Thunderkick officially launched in Ontario on June 18 after going live with PokerStars and fellow international operator LeoVegas

The Women’s Winter Festival was created after it had been discovered that just 3% of poker tournament fields were women, attempting to open the space to a more competitive and supporting environment.

Female players of all levels including professional poker players such as Marle Spragg, Jennifer Shahade, Kyna Englan, and Vanessa Kade were in attendance for the four-day tournament.
