Cybersecurity alert! IGT reports unauthorized access

The company has taken certain systems offline as a protection measure.
Key Points
- Unauthorized access to the IGT system has caused the company some disruptions in service
- The company launched an investigation after discovering the system was accessed
IGT has joined the ranks of gaming industry companies that have reported cybersecurity incidents.
The supplier recently reported that “an unauthorized third party gained access to certain of its systems” to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
IGT further reported that the incident has caused “disruptions in portions of its internal information technology systems and applications” as a result.
IGT launched an investigation and activated its internal response plan soon after discovering unauthorized access had taken place.
According to the SEC report, “The company has also proactively taken certain systems offline to help protect them. The company’s ongoing investigation and response include efforts to bring its systems back online.
“The company is communicating with its customers and other stakeholders, as appropriate, and, where possible, the company has implemented alternatives for certain operations in accordance with its business continuity plans to mitigate disruptions and continue servicing its customers.”
Good to know: IGT provides its technology to 26 US lotteries and to 16 global lotteries
This is not the first time cybersecurity threats have impacted the gaming industry. Last year, Caesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts International experienced online ransomware attacks, which led to both companies issuing letters to their customers, informing them that their information might have been compromised.
Both companies were targeted by Scattered Spider, a hacking group that took a total of six terabytes of data from both major operators.
However, MGM and Caesars were able to recover their systems. While Caesars chose to pay the ransom of nearly $15m to regain access, MGM did not pay.
