North Carolina posts $612m October sports wagering handle

The North Carolina State Lottery Commission has published its sports statewide wagering results for the month of October. Players placed more than $612m in wagers throughout the month.
The state’s monthly handle rose by close to $35m when compared to results from September.
This spring, North Carolina joined the ranks of more than 35 US states that allow legal sports wagering within their borders. Sports betting statewide made its debut in March.
Since the market’s debut, the state has generated $1.89bn in handle.
North Carolina players took home $560.6m in winnings last month.
Promo wagering revenue in October totaled almost $23m. The state posted a total of $48.7m in gross wagering revenue during the month.
Sports betting last month contributed close to $8.7m in taxes to the state.

Prior to the launch, the North Carolina State Lottery Commission issued sports wagering operator licenses to eight operators.
Under the current regulations, the Lottery Commission is allowed to award up to 12 interactive sports wagering operator licenses statewide once the market is established. Players would then have access to online and mobile betting, as well as in-person wagering.
In other state news, the Sports Betting Committee has agreed to allow time for public comment regarding its recent notice of proposed rule changes.
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ (NCDHHS) Problem Gambling Program, along with ECU’s Gambling Research and Policy Initiative (GRPI) and Birches Health recently teamed up to offer gambling disorder resources and treatment options to state players.
