CDI opens The Rose in Northern Virginia

The development will hope to contribute to the expansion of Thoroughbred horse racing in the state.

Churchill Downs (CDI) has announced the opening of its new entertainment resort in Dumfries, Virginia, named The Rose Gaming Resort. After investing $460m into the property, CDI reported that it has also added approximately 500 permanent jobs as a result of the new facility. 

“Churchill Downs Incorporated is thrilled to deliver a destination resort that will be a major economic contributor to the Town of Dumfries and Northern Virginia,” CDI CEO Bill Carstanjen said. 

“Along with our local hiring commitments and strong family-supporting wages, we are committed to continued investment in Prince William County as we are proud to do for all of the communities in which we operate in Virginia.”

The Rose is described as an 175,000 sq ft entertainment venue that also includes 1,650 historical racing machines (HRMs).

As a result of the addition of the 1,650 HRMs, Colonial Downs Racetrack in New Kent, Virginia will add 16 days of live racing to the 2025 racing season.

The development of the new facility will hope to contribute to the expansion of Thoroughbred horse racing in the state of Virginia. 

As part of a community partnership, CDI has also committed $2m to fund the design of a new community center to be built in Dumfries.
