Missouri voters projected to legalize sports betting in the state

Missouri would become the 39th state (and the District of Columbia) to allow legal sportsbooks in the US.
Key Points
- Amendment 2 would allow legalized sports betting in the state
- However, the voting suggests a close decision
Missouri is set to legalize sports betting based on early voting indications, though the margins are fine with only a small segment of votes left to be declared.
As well as voting on the next President of the US, there were a number of measures on the ballot across the country, including in Missouri.
Voters in the Show-Me State were given the option to allow for the opening of a legal statewide sports betting market by saying yes to Amendment 2.
This came after Missouri Judge Daniel Green back in September struck down an attempt to invalidate a sports betting petition, paving the way for the sports betting ballot amendment to go ahead.
At the time of writing (09:21 UK time), reports suggest 94% of the votes were in for the ballot with 50.47% of those votes in favour of legalizing sports betting. Should the final result reflect similar, it would permit licensed sports wagering, including online betting, for individuals aged 21 and over.
Good to know: Should Missouri pass Amendment 2, it would be the first state in 2024 to legalize sports betting
On top of allowing sports betting, the amendment would include a 10% wagering tax on revenues received to be appropriated for educational institutions in the state.
Missouri would become the 39th state to allow legal sportsbooks in the US, while it would also mean that 31 states would then be live for mobile wagering.
The push to legalize sports betting in the state had faced opposition and in mid-October a campaign opposed to it cancelled $1.2m in TV ad sports, choosing to shift focus to “more direct contacts,” while the St Louis City Democratic Central Committee only last week voiced its opposition to legalized sports betting.
