Mary Cheeks honored with Excellence in Advocacy Award by NAACP San Diego

Mary Cheeks, the President and GM of Jamul Casino in California, has been honored by the National Associaton for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) San Diego branch with the Excellence in Advocacy Award.
The branch recognized Cheeks and other notable community members at the 2024 Freedom Fund Dinner on October 19 for their ongoing engagement and continued efforts to “create a space that offers equality for all.”
Cheeks has been part of the casino management and finance industries for three decades, overcoming numerous obstacles as a black woman in a typically male-dominated space. She has helped build Jamul Casino to become a significant presence in the southern California area, currently supporting more than 1,200 permanent jobs in the area.
Jamul Casino is owned and operated by the Jamul Indian Village Development Corporation (JIVDC), with Chairwoman Erica Pinto speaking on Cheeks’ impact on the property.
“Mary is a wonderful advocate for the community, and her constant dedication to making a positive impact is nothing short of inspiring. She goes above and beyond to support those around her, always finding ways to uplift others and create opportunities,” Pinto said.
“Receiving this award is a reflection of her hard work and passion, and Mary is truly deserving of this honorable recognition.”
The Freedom Fund Dinner honors numerous individuals for their contributions including continuous advocacy, commitment to social equality and furthering community engagement.

Jamul Casino will be opening a new hotel tower during the spring of 2025, showcasing the continued improvement Cheeks plans for her casino.
The $430m property features almost 1,700 slot machines, 46 live table games, dedicated poker room and various restaurants for guests.
