Massachusetts posts $678.7m September sports betting handle

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has published the state’s casino and sports betting results for the month of September. Its casinos, Plainridge Park Casino, MGM Springfield and Encore Boston Harbor generated nearly $92m in gross gaming revenue (GGR) during the month.

Slots accounted for nearly $62.8m of the state’s total GGR, while table games brought in another $29.2m.

In a breakdown of September earnings by casino, MGM Springfield ended the month with nearly $21m in revenue from table games and slots. Encore Boston Harbor maintained the number one spot with $57.9m in revenue from slots and table games, while Plainridge Park Casino brought in close to $13.4m in total September revenue.

Last month, all three casinos paid a total of nearly $26.2m to the state in taxes.

All three casinos hold Category 1 licenses, which allow them to operate retail sports betting locations in their casinos.

Good to know: BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, ESPN Bet, Fanatics Betting & Gaming and FanDuel currently hold licenses in the state to function as Category 3 operators

Sports betting last month generated a $678.7m handle, with $667.6m coming from bets placed online and another $11.1m from retail licensees.

Online and retail sports betting locations generated close to $73.5m in taxable gaming revenue, with the state taking in almost $14.6m in taxes from online and retail sports betting in September.

Retail sports betting became legal in Massachusetts in January 2023. The state welcomed the online sports betting market in March 2023.
