Brazilian Senate launches CPI investigating online gambling industry

This has been put forward by Senator Soraya Thronicke.
Key Points
- CPI will look into possible link between online betting companies and money laundering
- There are suspicions that software has been used to influence financials
The Senate in Brazil has launched a parliamentary inquiry, or CPI, to investigate “the growing influence of online virtual gambling games on the budget of Brazilian families.”
This CPI has been put forward by Senator Soraya Thronicke, receiving support from 30 other senators, with the creation of the CPI needing at least 27 signatures.
The basis of the CPI also looks at the possible association of online betting companies “with criminal organizations involved in money laundering practices, as well as the use of digital influencers in the promotion and dissemination of these activities.”
This has come about owing to suspicion of software being programmed in a way to guarantee an exaggerated profit margin for gambling companies and cause losses to bettors. The Senator also highlighted that online gaming is a silent addiction compared to other addictions.
Overall, the objective of this investigation is looking at the practice of currency evasion and money laundering, also looking at the influence that Brazilian personalities have on the operation of betting programs.
Thronicke said, “There is no point in closing our eyes to this problem. It is a fact. It is one of the main reasons for attacks on life and separations.”
Senator Dr. Hiran Gonçalves added, “I think that, to protect Brazilians and for this House to provide a response to society, [the CPI] is fundamental.”
In other news from Brazil, Esportes Gaming Brasil has acquired a controlling stake in ST Soft and is authorized to operate in the state of Rio de Janeiro with authorization from the Rio de Janeiro State Lottery (Loterj).
