Koi Nation of Northern California says casino plan meets Indian Gaming Law requirements

The Shiloh Resort & Casino project would be in Sonoma County.
The Koi Nation of Northern California is in “full compliance” with the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act’s “Restored Lands Provision,” in relation to the Tribe’s Shiloh Resort & Casino project located in Sonoma County. This is according to the Tribe itself.
Koi Nation of Northern California’s Tribal Council Chair Darin Beltran commented, “The promise of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act’s ‘restored lands provision’ was to remedy the tragic history of forced removal and relocation by allowing restored lands to be utilized for tribal gaming.
“Like it or not, a rigid set of rules exists to qualify for this provision of federal law – and we’ve dutifully met them all.”
Vice Chair Dino Betran took a moment to discuss the Nation’s ties to Sonoma County by saying, “Since that time, the center of Koi Pomo life – and death – has been in Sonoma County.
“Our application is in full compliance with Indian Gaming Regulation Act’s restored lands provision.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom recently sent a letter to the US Department of the Interior (DOI) and asked the department not to proceed with two casino projects.
The first is for the Koi Nation of Northern California’s project in Sonoma County involving Shiloh Resort and Casino. The second is Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians’ casino project at Scotts Valley Casino and Tribal Housing Project in Solano County.
Newsom had listed concerns in the letter that the DOI has “departed from specific procedural pathways and important safeguards typically taken by tribes who wish to restore tribal land and establish a casino.”
