Wisconsin Council on Problem Gambling urges parents to be aware of addiction signs

The council said problem gambling is on the rise in younger demographics.
The Wisconsin Council on Problem Gambling has reported an increase in problem gambling involving teens, according to a WXPR news report.
The organization has urged parents to take a proactive approach when it comes to their teens and has encouraged parents to pay attention to behaviors that could point to signs of problem gambling.
The council listed potential concerning behaviors like changes in behaviors, spending habits and changes in interests as signs that could indicate trouble.
Wisconsin Council on Problem Gambling Executive Director Rose Blozinski shared with local news, “A lot of times parents see gambling as a safe alternative to alcohol, drugs, sex or whatever you have.
“In reality, it isn’t. It can be just as dangerous, maybe more dangerous.”
Other studies have examined how problem gambling is affecting younger demographics.
Fairleigh Dickinson University recently published a survey on which demographics exhibit potential problem gambling behavior, according to a recent Associated Press report.
The study found that 10% of young men in the United States “show behavior that indicates a gambling problem,” versus 3% of the general population.
Respondents during the survey were asked to answer a nine-question battery called the Problem Gambling Survey Index.
Participants completed questions asking about certain behaviors related to problem gambling, including borrowing money to gamble and if their gambling habits cause emotional or financial problems.
Out of those polled, 24% of men reported at least one problem behavior. For men 30 years old and younger, the percentage of those who reported at least one behavior rose to 45%.
