Pamunkey Tribe to team up with Boyd Gaming on Norfolk casino development
The duo hopes to complete the project by September 2027.
The Pamunkey Indian Tribe will collaborate with Boyd Gaming on a new casino project in Norfolk, Virginia, according to a WHRO local news report.
However, the duo has not revealed specifics of the terms of the agreement.
Both the Tribe and Boyd released a joint statement to local news regarding the new partnership and said, “Boyd Gaming has started the process required to help the Tribe bring its vision to fruition, in a way that will deliver meaningful benefits for the Tribe, the City of Norfolk and the Commonwealth of Virginia.”
Boyd Gaming currently manages a Tribal casino in Northern California and owns and operates 28 casino in 10 states.
The city council is expected to obtain documents related to the casino project “in the coming weeks” which outline specifics regarding Boyd Gaming’s involvement, the local report said.
According to the documents, Boyd Gaming will be a majority owner in Golden Eagle Consulting, as well as the Tribe’s development partner for the project. The Tribe will hold equity stake in Golden Eagle of “at least 20%.”
Golden Eagle Consulting was formed by gambling billionaire Jon Yarbrough.
In an interview with local news, Norfolk Mayor Kenny Alexander described Boyd Gaming as the right fit for this project.
He went on to comment, “Of course, they were struggling to get the project out of the ground.
“Bringing in Boyd – someone with the ability and the wherewithal and experience and more importantly the financial strength to build a world-class casino resort hotel – is exactly what we need.”
