State government collected nearly $800,000 in taxes as wagering remains ‘positive’

Sports betting in Colorado continued to surge in November, as handle jumped almost 10% from the previous month.

According to figures released by the Colorado Department of Revenue’s Division of Gaming, the total handle in November for both retail and online sports betting wagers in Colorado was $231,238,842, a 9.7% increase over October 2020.

The state said it collected $793,820 in taxes from sports betting operators last month.

“The released figures for November’s sports betting wagering and taxes that show another month with high wagers and substantial taxes collected on this growing industry in Colorado,” the Division of Gaming said in a statement.

In a state that follows its National Football League team, the Denver Broncos, with a near-religious fervor, it is not surprising November’s top sport to bet was NFL football, with $88.4m in wagers placed with both retail and online operators.

The second-most popular sport to bet was college football with $22.2m, and in third was table tennis with $12.4m. Professional basketball and NCAA basketball took the fourth and fifth slots with $9.6 million and $8.2 million, respectively, officials said.

“The positive response by Coloradans to sports betting continues to bring voter intended results that can only mean good things to come for the beneficiaries,” said Dan Hartman, director of the Colorado Division of Gaming.

On November 6, 2019, Colorado voters passed Proposition DD, legalizing sports betting in the state.
