Mississippi generates $13.9m July sports betting handle

The Mississippi Gaming Commission has released its sports betting monthly report for July.

Last month, the state’s sports wagering handle fell again when compared to results from the previous month.

Mississippi posted a $13.9m sports betting handle for the month of July, down nearly $6m month-over-month.

Coastal players contributed the largest amount of wagers to the overall state handle in July. The Central region grabbed the second-place spot for July.

During the month of July, Northern Mississippi players bet more on baseball than in any other category, with the total in wagers reaching nearly $1.2m.

Bettors in Northern Mississippi contributed close to $2.3m to the state’s total handle last month.

Coastal region players wagered the most on baseball and sports parlay cards last month. Wagers on baseball throughout the Coastal region totaled almost $3.7m, while bettors wagered nearly $1.6m on parlay.  

The region’s handle reached $7.7m during July.

Players in Central Mississippi bet almost $1.6m on baseball and $1.7m on parlay during the month of June. The region’s players placed $3.9m in July bets.

Statewide retail sports betting generated close to $1.9m in taxable revenue in July.

Retail sports betting has been legal in Mississippi for several years. However, legislative negotiators were not able to advance a final mobile sports betting proposal, which means online sports betting will continue to remain illegal throughout the state.

Earlier in the state’s most recent legislative session, both the Senate and the House passed versions of the state’s Mobile Sports Wagering Act. But concerns surrounding the fate of Mississippi’s brick-and-mortar casinos kept the bill from further advancement.
