Illinois experiences rising trend of calls made to problem gambling helpline

New data from the National Problem Gambling Helpline Network has shown that the number of calls coming in from Illinois players is on the rise, according to a recent local news report from the Rockford Register Star.
Calls to the helpline from Illinois residents have reached nearly 16,000 during the first half of 2024, as stated by the report. This number reflects a 23% boost in calls made during the prior year period.
According to the recent report, call volume more than doubled in 2023 when compared to the call volume in 2022.
During 2023, over 25,000 calls came into the helpline.
Illinois Council on Problem Gambling Executive Director David Wohl told local news that the rising trend statewide “makes sense.” He explained that the growing sports betting industry could be a contributing factor.
Wohl commented, “The more people are exposed to it, then you could draw the conclusion that more people may start to develop gambling problems. Gambling is everyplace.
“I remember watching a football game and they would never talk about betting. Now, the announcers are talking about the line on the game as they’re announcing the game. That just blows my mind.”
Wohl went on to explain that the “Are You Really Winning?” ad campaign’s success could be another factor that has contributed to the rise in call volume.
The campaign was launched in 2022 by the Illinois Department of Human Services as a way to educate players on the warning signs of problem gambling. The ad lists several warning signs that include asking family and friends for money and hiding how much money is spent gambling.
