New York lawmakers vote to transfer Nassau Coliseum property to Las Vegas Sands

The approval brings Long Island one step closer to a new casino.
A recent major vote has brought Long Island a little closer to seeing a new casino and resort complex, according to a CBS News New York local report.
Lawmakers voted in favor of transferring the 72-acre Nassau Coliseum property to Las Vegas Sands. The company plans to build a $6bn casino and resort complex at the Long Island property.
During the legislative session, a judge ruled that a re-vote on the casino’s approval was required because “the county did not properly notify the public or review the plans before applying for the lease.”
The move to bring a casino to Long Island has been met with some pushback. Those opposed to the project have raised concerns that a new casino could cause a boost in crime, gambling addiction, traffic and environmental stress.
However, supporters of a Long Island casino claim the venue could improve the local economy by providing more jobs as well as additional revenue for the county and state.
Las Vegas Sands, along with several other bidders, have submitted proposals for one of three downstate spots for possible casino expansion.
Online sports betting in New York went live two years ago. The state’s sports betting handle during May ranked among the highest results to date since the Empire State opened the market for mobile sports wagering.
November remains the top month since the market’s opening, according to the New York State Gaming Commission’s report.
To date, more than 35 states have embraced regulated sports betting since the US Supreme Court overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) in May 2018, also known as the Bradley Act.
