FanDuel and BetMGM suspend online DC operations

FanDuel and BetMGM sportsbooks were supposed to be available for all Washington DC potential customers on July 15, but now remain suspended due to inactivity from the city’s government. FanDuel was the only sports gambling operator offering citywide sports wagering, but has now stopped accepting bets as of July 16 because Mayor Muriel Bowser has yet to sign the city’s budget for fiscal year 2025, which allows for the continuation of sports betting in the city.
FanDuel replaced Gambet DC in April, as Gamebet DC was the city’s failed attempt at lifting citywide sports betting off the ground. The sportsbook operator was scheduled to be joined by BetMGM, also meant to go live on July 15 but is now only accepting bets in proximity to Nationals Park. BetMGM also canceled an event promoting its expanded DC offering that had already been promoted.
Caesars sportsbook was reportedly supposed to go live on a citywide basis July 15 as well, but has said gamblers need to be in proximity to Capital One Arena, where it operates a brick-and-mortar sportsbook.
FanDuel also said its brick-and-mortar sportsbook at Audi Field will continue to accept wagers despite the pause in its online operations.
In a statement to The Washington Post, FanDuel said it would resume sports betting operations in the city “upon final approval of the full year 2025 DC budget.”
The DC Council gave final approval to the city’s $21bn budget for 2025 in June, which included a bill to expand the city’s sports-betting offerings with up to seven licenses up for grabs.
