Former Las Vegas casino executive Scott Sibella awaits sentencing in money-laundering case

He could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Scott Sibella, a former high-ranking Las Vegas casino executive, awaits sentencing and will stand before a federal judge after pleading guilty to illegal gambling activities, according to a recent Associated Press report.
The former Resorts World Las Vegas President and MGM Grand COO could face a $250,000 fine and up to five years in prison for violating federal anti-money laundering rules. The guidelines state that casinos must file reports of suspicious transactions.
Earlier this year, Sibella admitted that he “allowed an illegal bookmaker to gamble millions of dollars at the MGM Grand and pay off debts in cash.” The incident at MGM Grand involved former minor league baseball player Wayne Nix, according to the court documents.
Sibella said in his plea that he “allowed Nix to gamble at MGM Grand and affiliated properties with illicit proceeds generated from the illegal gambling business without notifying the casinos’ compliance department.”
Nix also awaits sentencing after pleading guilty in April 2022 to filing a false tax return and to operating an illegal gambling business.
Attorneys Jeffrey Rutherford in Los Angeles and John Spilotro in Las Vegas are representing Sibella and have asked US District Judge Dolly Gee for leniency and a probation sentence.
Sibella’s attorneys recently sent testimonial letters of support to the judge, the Associated Press reported. Advocates for Sibella include Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill, who is currently the elected head of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
In related news, regulators in Nevada are considering imposing a fine against Sibella for up to $750,000 and could revoke or suspend his gambling license due to a complaint filed by Gaming Control Board investigators at the end of last month.
The Nevada Gaming Commission has not yet considered the complaint, the AP report said.
