Bill filed in North Carolina to ban prop bets on college sports

There has been recent scrutiny of proposition bets.
Marcia Morey, a North Carolina state lawmaker, has filed a bill to ban prop bets on college sports in the state.
The bill, which is known as House Bill 967, would place a ban on placing proposition wagers on college and amateur sports, while it would also ban in-person sports wagers at sport facilities for eight hours before or during any college event.
This follows on from the NCAA President Charlie Baker releasing a statement urging state lawmakers to remove college prop bets from all betting markets, in an effort to protect the integrity of the game and protect student-athletes.
This in itself came in light of the NBA’s investigation into prop bet abnormalities regarding Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter, which has since seen the basketballer handed a lifetime ban from the NBA.
Other states have also followed suit with similar measures, with Louisiana set to bring in a statewide ban from prop betting on college athletes through licensed sportsbooks this summer.
Colorado, Arizona, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania and Oregon have put regulations in place to restrict prop betting, while Maryland, Ohio and Vermont have banned props betting on college sports.
Furthermore, Illinois, Connecticut and Iowa have prohibited props betting for in-state teams.
In other sports betting news today, a campaign in Missouri has received more than 340,000 signatures for a ballot proposal in an attempt to legalize sports betting, while DraftKings has reported its financial figures for the first quarter of 2024.
