FBI Investigating Fatal Stabbing at SkyDancer Casino In Belcourt

Federal authorities are investigating a homicide that occurred early Saturday morning on the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation in Belcourt, North Dakota, tribal and federal officials confirmed.
Authorities Respond To Belcourt Casino In Homicide Case
Leadership with the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians said the Rolette County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call around 6 a.m. reporting an incident on the reservation. According to the tribe, a suspect was immediately taken into custody, and officials emphasized there is no ongoing threat to the public.
While the tribe did not initially specify the exact location of the incident, a spokesperson for the FBI confirmed the investigation is centered at the SkyDancer Casino and Resort in Belcourt. U.S. Attorney Nick Chase also confirmed that federal authorities are leading a homicide investigation at the casino property.
Local law enforcement and the FBI are investigating the stabbing death of a woman at the hotel, according to federal officials. The identities of both the victim and the suspect have not been released, and authorities have declined to provide additional details, citing the active nature of the investigation.
The FBI reiterated Saturday that there is no danger to the public but declined further comment. The Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services (BIA-OJS) is assisting in the investigation, and any potential charges remain pending review by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Condolences Offered To Family Of The Victim
In a statement, the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians offered condolences to the victim’s family and described the incident as an act of domestic violence.
“This was a senseless act of domestic violence,” the tribe said. “We hope the communities arise together to heal and support the family.”
Belcourt is located in north-central North Dakota, just south of the Canadian border, and serves as the headquarters of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians. The SkyDancer Casino and Resort is one of the area’s largest employers and a central gathering place for residents and visitors throughout the region.
Tribal leaders and law enforcement officials stressed that the incident appears to be isolated and unrelated to a separate homicide investigation reported Sunday on the Spirit Lake Reservation in eastern North Dakota.
Authorities say more information will be released as it becomes available.
