IGT Extends Rhode Island Sports Betting Deal Through 2028 Amid Market Expansion Talks

IGT announced on Wednesday that it has inked a two-year contract extension with the Rhode Island Lottery, ensuring its IGT PlaySports technology will continue to support the state’s retail and mobile sports betting operations through at least November 2028.
Following a stalled 2025 effort to bring major operators into Rhode Island’s sports betting market, the Rhode Island Lottery has decided to maintain its partnership with IGT as its sports betting provider for the foreseeable future.

The contract extension maintains Rhode Island’s centralized sports betting model, with the Rhode Island Lottery overseeing statewide wagering through IGT’s PlaySports technology via the Sportsbook Rhode Island platform.
The extension follows several months after Senate Majority Leader Frank Ciccone’s unsuccessful push to expand the market, which had proposed adding three to five additional sportsbooks.
In June 2025, the state Senate approved Ciccone’s bill, but it stalled in the House and never received a committee hearing before the legislative session ended. Ciccone and other supporters of the expansion were bolstered by a Spectrum Gaming Group report commissioned by lawmakers, which recommended introducing multiple operators and reducing tax rates to enhance market competitiveness.

“IGT is very pleased to continue our long-term relationship with the Rhode Island Lottery through 2028 and help generate important revenue for the State through its sports betting operations powered by PlaySports technology,” IGT Senior Vice President of Sports Betting Joe Bertolone said.
Rhode Island was one of the first states to legalize sports betting in 2018, launching its regulated market the following year. The state adopted a single-operator model, awarding the contract to IGT in collaboration with Bally’s.
According to the Rhode Island Current, the state plans to introduce a second sportsbook to compete with IGT’s Sportsbook Rhode Island.
Lottery spokesperson Paul Grimaldi told the outlet that the lottery aims to award a contract for online sports betting after November 2026, with bids reportedly being accepted through February 19.
